The Womb cave

The magic “Womb“ cave is located near the town of Kardzhali, in the area Tangardak Kaya, near the village of Nenkovo. The name of the area translates like “the blaring rock”. To get to the cave you have to walk about 40-60 minutes, but the difficulty starts when you reach it. You have to climb to the cave on a steep wooden staircase, which is sometimes rotten.

According to scientists, opened in 1994 cave that resembles a woman’s womb is a Thracian sanctuary from 9-10 century BC. But such caves that symbolized a woman’s fertility are supposed to date from the Copper Age and at least four millennia before Christ. Around the Thracian sanctuary near the village of Tatul, also in Bulgaria, there are also similar caves that resemble women’s womb, but they are much smaller and not with such perfect shape.

Once a year, at 12 noon, the sun ray reaches the cave and creates a new life, fertilizes the female womb of the Mother Goddess, to which is dedicated the cave. Some say it happens on Christmas Day on December 25, and according to others – in February. The truth is that every day at 12 o’clock sharp you can see how the sun’s rays penetrate into the cave. But only one day through the year they reach to its very bottom.

The total length that has to go the sun ray to illuminate the altar at the bottom of the cave is 22 meters. The altar is actually carved by human hands. These are the last 1.5 m at the bottom of the Womb. The altar is about a meter and 30 centimeters tall, and in its center, there is a small hole. When the sun ray reaches that hole her ritual is performed and there is a new life created for, the holy alliance between the Sun and the Mother Goddess. Today childless couples visit the Womb cave to gain a long-awaited child. And often they succeed.
