Buzovgrad’s megalith

Mystical megalith near the Bulgarian village of Buzovgrad is still hiding its secrets, 4000 years after it was created by a human hand. “The door to the Mother Goddess” as the rock is called was created around 2000 years BC. From the people who lived in the Bulgarian lands before the Thracians. Later, however, it was used for ritual purposes by one of the largest nations of the earth at that time according to Herodotus.

There are various theories about the purpose that served the megalithic structure. But the fact is that during the summer equinox on June 21st the sunlight passes through the rock window near the village Buzovgrad, Kazanlak. According to the beliefs of the Thracians, the sunset symbolizes the world of the dead. So it is supposed that the Megalith was kind of a gate between worlds. Moreover, according to the legend, the Thracians were happy and celebrated when someone died because they thought that it was the beginning of real life and the stay on Earth was punishment.

So one theory is that the megalith was used for the burial of Thracian aristocrats. Or as an observation of the stars. Or as a base for sending signals to the opposite peaks of Stara Planina. From the megalith could be viewed also the capital Odrisses Sevtopolis, which is now submerged under the waters of Koprinka dam, and the few preserved artifacts from the city can be seen in the Historical Museum of Kazanlak. According to another scientific theory, the megalith was used as a calendar that helped the Thracians to organize their life easier.
