  • The unique bathroom in the house of the rich merchant from Plovdiv Stepan Hindliyan will be restored. It is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria bathroom made of marble and plaster. It was built with arches and a dome with holes through which the sunlight enters. It was founded on the principle of the Roman hypocaust. The bathroom was heated by underfloor heating. In the floor were built clay pipes with holes in which the hot air circulated.

The hot air was warming up by the fireplace located in the hollow space between the walls of the kitchen and the bathroom. The water for washing and bathing was heated in tanks. The house is equipped with a deep well lined inside with lime, which serves as a filter for rainwater.

The owner of the house the Armenian Stepan Hindliyan traded with India, and hence his surname. He was so rich that he even built a separate house to store his money. Today you can see the small building to the left of the entrance when you step into the courtyard of the house. Hindliyan was so rich that he had a fountain with constantly running rose water in one of the rooms in his house. When stepping inside in the old house you will be amazed by the carvings, inlays, and decorations.

You can really travel through the whole world until you explore the extremely rich decoration of the Hindliyanov’s house. The merchant of Armenian origin wanted to decorate his home with scenes from the sights that he saw during his many travels. So you can see on the walls and into the typical decorative niches called “ala franga” painted scenes of Venice, St. Petersburg, Lisbon, Athens, Stockholm and even one of the lost wonders of the world – the Alexandria Lighthouse.
